Georgia Organics is the main organization in Georgia that supports organic and sustainable farmers and the people who buy their products. From the mission statement on the website of Georgia Organics, I quote: "Local foods, sustainable farms and healthy people-those are the primary goals of Georgia Organics, in redefining a food production system that benefits farmers, consumers and the environment. Georgia Organics is a nonprofit membership organization."
Suzanne talked about the things that Georgia Organics is doing. Education of both farmers and the community is the focus of the Georgia Organics. They provide education that help farmers become more effective at what they are doing, introduce them to new things to grow or new knowledge about how to grow products and help them with the business end of selling their products. The annual conference is the biggest thing that happens, but there are many smaller offerings throughout the year. One of the events is the Introductory Course in Organic Farming & Gardening Aug.11-Nov 15 for two full days each month, which can be taken by farmers and gardeners alike.
The advantages of organic and local produce is that it doesn't have to be bred to travel, and therefore is more flavorful and often more tender. When produce is sold locally farmers can grow heirloom varieties that are more suited to the area in which they are grown. Some of these have more diversity and less uniformity and are not always as "pretty" as the fruit and vegetables that we find in the market that we have come to believe is normal.
