Sandor Katz- The Revolution Will Not Be Microwaved PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 05 September 2007
Sandor Katz was back for a second time on Beyond the Measuring Cup at Radio Sandy Springs.  We discussed his second book, The Revolution Will Not be Microwaved: Inside the underground Food Movement.  His first book:  Wild Fermentation:  The flavor, nutrition, and craft of live-culture foods, is filled with recipes for the adventurous cook.  We talked to him in May, 2007 about making live-culture food.

This time we discussed the importance of farmers being able to maintain diversity in the plants and animals that they grow.  Plants are being  claimed as intellectual property by large corporations like Monsanto.  Monsanto is  even prosecuting farmers whose own fields have been contaminated with the seeds and accusing them of stealing the seeds.  Farmers have forever saved the seeds from the previous year's crops to plant in the new year.  This is not being allowed by the big corporations who are developing new sometimes genetically engineered seeds.  We have no way of knowing what effect these new "foods" have on our bodies.

There are thousands of people and groups throughout the world who are demanding good, healthy, locally grown heirloom plants and animals for their food.  New groups are starting to preserve foods in traditional ways and to create pickles and other foods that had been lost to us.  We have previously talked to representatives of the Slow Food Movement and the Weston A. Price Foundation, who are two among many.

There is no question that how we eat is related to our health.  Americans are not being informed adequately about the contents of our food.  If each person would take  responsibility for finding out what is in their  food and demand to be informed, we can have the diversity that will keep us healthy and Americans can turn around the alarming health crisis that we are facing now.  It can happen.

Once again, organic, locally grown, raw food, as close to the earth as possible is the best food that we can cook with and eat.
