Jessica Prentice is an author, and founding co-worker-owner of Three Stone Hearth: A Community Supported Kitchen in West Berkeley, California. She defines a Community Supported Kitchen much like community supported agriculture. She has about 1000 potential subscribers to her service of food preparation. About 100-150 each week order food from the menu that is published ahead of time. The menu of the week ranges from entrees with meat or vegetables to fermented drinks and pastries. All of the food is packed in mason jars and the jars are returned. Every effort is made to be ecological about the process. The goal is to use local food as much as possible.
For about 4-5 years Jessica published a monthly newsletter related to the new moon, called Stirring the Cauldron. The archive of those newsletters can be found on her website at: www.wisefoodways.com. Everyone encouraged her to create a book from the newsletters and in a round about way Full Moon Feast is the result of that. Jessica chose names for each of 13 moons in the year, from among the many different names that have been given to the different times of the year. People that lived on the land named the full moon for what was happening as far as food is concerned. You will find names like "corn moon", "hunger moon", or "egg moon". The names were generally related to the foods most abundant during the time of that full moon.... even "hunger moon" was reflective of available food.
There are stories about the history of food and lore of food as well as recipes for each of the 13 moons. The moon calendar probably predates the calendar based on the sun that we use today. There is evidence that as early as 25,000 B.C.E. time was marked by the moon. In cultures before electricity the sky took on much more significance as well as the normal rhythms of the earth and seasons. You may buy a personally autographed copy of Jessica's book by going to her website at www.wisefoodways.com.
